Sharona Dayan, DDS, DMSc
Diplomate, American Board of Periodontology

“Dentistry has always been an important part of my life. Both my father and brother practice general dentistry in California.  I graduated from UCLA Dental School, and then pursued specialty training in Periodontics and Oral Medicine at Harvard. There, I also became a Doctor of Medical Sciences in Oral Biology where I conducted NIH-funded research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the areas of oral cancer and periodontal disease.”

During her time at Harvard Brigham and Women’s Hospital, she provided care for medically complex patients needing oral care in a hospital setting, such as individuals with cancer.  She has advanced training for diagnosing oral cancers and improving the oral health of medically compromised patients.  She has completed rotations in oncology, dermatology, surgical oral pathology, internal medicine, inpatient hospital care, head and neck radiology, cancer imaging, infectious disease, emergency medicine, rheumatology, immunology, and orofacial pain.  Her expertise in the relationship between oral health and its impact on overall health gives her insight when treating patients with other medical conditions.

Dr. Dayan has received over five years of periodontal education beyond the general dentist degree. More recently, she has obtained advanced training from prestigious institutes such as Dr. Pat Allen’s Center for Advanced Education, Misch International Implant Institute, the Kois Center, and the Dawson Center.

Dr. Dayan’s postdoctoral research on the biomarker Interleukin-1 as implicated in periodontal disease in the October 2004 edition of Journal of Dental Research,  is now the target of the PerioPredict test, which uses a simple cheek swab for determining which patients are genetically prone to severe periodontitis.

For eight years, Dr. Sharona Dayan was the Founder and Director of the Boston Chapter of the Seattle Study Club  (Boston Dental Alliance).  She ran monthly meetings to help dentists and hygienists keep abreast of the latest developments and treatment options available to patients, organized hands-on demonstrations, conducted problem-solving workshops, panel discussions, and clinical treatment planning sessions as well as inviting internationally known speakers to share information at local meetings.
