I want to offer 5 dental tips for fighting COVID 19. These tips are meant to boost your immune system and keep you strong.
Keep your mouth as healthy as possible. Studies have shown that the bacteria from gum disease can be inhaled into the lungs and cause pneumonia. You can read about it in this scientific article. Even if you don’t develop pneumonia right away, your lungs and immune system will be more susceptible if you get exposed to the COVID 19 virus.
For routine dental care to keep your mouth healthy at home brush twice a day for 2 minutes and add a rinse to your routine if you haven’t already. I recommend the Oral B Power Brush for a super clean feeling. there is also a tip called the Interproximal Tip that is easier than flossing. My favorite over the counter rinses are Closys and Listerine.
And remember, this virus is likely to come back so if you have been told you have gum disease don’t delay professional treatment when your periodontal practice opens up again. Be sure to get the sleep you need. Eight hours of sleep are recommended by sleep physicians to give your brain and body time to recharge and refresh. And remember that sleep quality is as important as sleep quantity. If you have sleep disordered breathing like snoring or upper airway resistance or sleep apnea your brain is getting aroused many times throughout the night and not having a chance to go into deep sleep. Many times these illnesses are caused by the oral structures collapsing at night. The treatment of unrefreshed sleep can sometimes start with a visit to the dentist. If you are having trouble sleeping because you are feeling anxious, try the natural herb ashwaganda. Ashwaganda is well known for its stress-reducing effects and lowers the likelihood of insomnia in people who are experiencing stress and anxiety. My favorite supplement is Innate Adrenal Response as it also contains magnesium, reishi mushroom and holy basil among other herbs.
Eating foods that are rich in probiotics can boost your natural immunity. Did you know that the scientist who discovered probiotics won the Nobel prize? He noticed that people who drank sour milk lived longer! Some examples of natural probiotics are culture-rich yogurt, fermented foods like cheese and soy sauce and kambucha drinks. If you need more of a boost, there are effective probiotics with millions of active cultures. My personal favorite is Innate Flora 20-14 for every day foundational health. If you have recently taken antibiotics or traveled abroad the higher strength Flora 50-14 can restore your balance and boost your immunity.
Be sure you are supplementing with Vitamin C and Zinc every day. This combination is a powerful preventative ally to reduce your risk of catching the common cold and reducing the severity and duration of symptoms should you get sick.
