In this video Dr. Sharona Dayan discusses LANAP laser treatment for gum disease and infected dental implants. LANAP is the only periodontal procedure that is FDA-cleared to reverse gum disease and offers a less painful, more successful treatment alternative.

The LANAP laser has a wavelength that is specific for the germs that cause gum disease. Only the disease tissue inside the pocket is ablated and healthy tissue is preserved. The result is a regenerated attachment that is healthy with reduced bleeding. Since introducing LANAP to her practice, Dr. Dayan has rarely needed to remove a tooth due to gum disease. She has been so impressed with the results that she underwent a rigorous process to become an instructor to teach other practitioners the patented LANAP technique.

The LANAP procedure is very patient-friendly and can be done in the lunch hour and you can go back to work that day. It’s that easy!

If you have been told that you need to have your teeth or your dental implants removed because of gum disease, there’s hope! Schedule a consultation with Dr. Dayan today to see how the LANAP laser treatment for gum disease can help. Our office phone number is 310-205-0900. For more information on LANAP, the gold standard for laser periodontal therapy visit lanap.com

As we face significance health and economic challenges due to the Corona COVID 19 pandemic I’d like to share some thoughts about the role of gum disease in accelerating pneumonia and other illnesses. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, is said to have cured arthritis by treating an infected tooth. So this idea that gum disease can contribute to illnesses in other parts of the body is 2,000 years old.

Gum disease has, in fact, been shown to be causative in pneumonia, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. A study showed that bacteria, viruses and funguses from the oral cavity can get aspirated into the lungs to cause pneumonia. You can read about this study here. When the Corona Virus establishes itself in the respiratory tract, if the system is already weakened by chronic infection from oral bacteria, the Coronavirus can cause more symptoms and do more damage. This is why it is important to have a clean mouth that is free of bacteria that cause gum disease. The Surgeon General, in the year 2000, gave an important message that oral health is essential to the general health and well-being of all Americans. You can read his statement on the Center for Disease Control website by clicking here.

If you have been diagnosed with gum disease or you notice bleeding, puffy gums, get yourself treated! With today’s advanced technologies there is no need to fear surgery. LANAP is patient -friendly, minimally invasive , safe and effective. It thoroughly disinfects the mouth and reverses gum disease without taking away healthy tissue. Call Dr. Sharona Dayan today to see if you are a candidate for LANAP and be on your way to a healthier you! You can also check out her videos on LANAP and the connection between diabetes and gum disease on her You Tube Channel here. Our number is (310)205-0900 and we are here for you.

Recently, I had a patient come in who received lip filler
but ended up having bruising the following day. We did one round of PerioLase®, for about a minute, and it
significantly lightened the bruise on the lip the very same day. The laser can
also be used to remove unsightly hemangiomas and herpes-related outbreaks around
the mouth.

As I am going through my Airway-Focused Dentistry Residency, its hit me like a ton of bricks how important it is to breathe through our nose. While this may sound obvious, many of us revert to bad mouth-breathing habits, especially in our sleep, and we don’t even know it! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I recently finished reading the book “Shut Your Mouth and Save Your Life” by George Catlin, written in 1870. He traveled throughout North America observing the daily habits of Native Americans of various tribes. The most striking difference between Native Americans and Europeans was the emphasis the Native Americans placed on nasal breathing. In fact, many mothers stayed up most of the night to make sure their babies were breathing through their noses and not their mouths. Nasal breathing places the tongue against the palate which properly develops the bone structure and teeth alignment of the upper face and, according to Catlin, led to fewer illnesses. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mouth breathing is a risk factor for gum disease and tooth loss. A mouth that is dry is sticky and will retain more germs. One of the signs might be bad breath. The pH of a dry mouth is also more acidic, leading to the overgrowth of harmful germs that cause cavities and gum disease. As a periodontist, I am dedicated to fighting gum disease and helping my patients retain their natural teeth.

If you think you might be mouth breathing at night in your sleep, I recommend the simple practice of mouth taping. A small piece of surgical tape is placed vertically in the middle of the mouth to remind you to keep your lips closed in your sleep. You can watch the video below for more details. Many of my patients report improved sleep after adopting the habit of mouth taping. Nose breathing delivers more oxygen to the brain so the brain can relax during sleep and go into the deeper phases. Of course, sleep is very complicated and nose breathing is just one aspect of deep sleep.

What are the breastfeeding benefits for facial development and, nose breathing and straight teeth? This is one of my favorite topics to discuss!

Did you know breastfeeding does more than just provide essential nutrients to a child? Breastfeeding also strengthens the muscles of the cheeks, lips and tongue and helps to develop a healthy swallow. Most importantly, breast feeding helps to develop a beautiful and healthy AIRWAY. Breast feeding and nose breathing are the two MOST IMPORTANT ways for babies to spend their days.

How Does Breast Feeding Affect Airway And Breathing And Future Sleep Apnea?

Breastfeeding helps to strengthen and tone the mouth and face muscles. Even babies need to go to the mom’s breast gym every day! It’s true! Mother Nature uses breastfeeding as a way to give nutrition to the baby and also to prepare the baby for a lifetime of good health by having a healthy swallow and airway.

It’s like this-during breastfeeding the baby has to WORK to get the milk out and survive. The muscles get strong and life is good! These are breastfeeding benefits. Strong muscles mean the baby will breathe through the nose, the way Mother Nature intended, because you need strong muscles to keep the mouth closed and to keep the tongue on the roof of the mouth in the resting position AND to swallow with the back of the tongue with the front of the tongue braced up against the roof of the mouth. Through out life, nose breathing with the tongue on the roof of the mouth and the lips closed is the single most important habit we can develop.

If your baby gets used to mouth breathing, on the other hand, this is BAD. The tongue drops down, gets weak and starts to develop unusual habits like thrusting against the teeth. When the tongue is low, the upper jaw starts to collapse down instead of forward, and the lower jaw develops too far back and starts to block the throat and airway. There is not enough space for the tongue and the teeth come out crooked. When there is not enough space for the tongue it falls back at night and causes us to choke. Not good! Your child is not breathing and is getting crooked teeth that will cost thousands of dollars to fix.

What Is A Healthy Swallow And Why Should I Care? I Am Swallowing Food Everyday.

A healthy swallow means the food is thrown into the throat with the back part of the tongue. This is a function that is a breastfeeding benefit. The front of the tongue braces against the roof of the mouth to give a bracing support for this to happen. A tongue thrust is a bad swallow where the tongue pushes against the teeth during swallowing. This can cause teeth to shift, orthodontic relapse, gum recession to name a few bad things that cost a lot of money to fix.

What Does Breastfeeding Have To Do With Good Face Development And Straight Teeth? I Mean, Really???

Yes, it’s true. The entire face development depends on muscles, not genetics! The muscles command how the bones grow. And breastfeeding benefits develops strong muscles and nose breathing habits that brace the tongue on the roof of the mouth and put the right amount of pressure on the upper jaw to develop forward. Guess what;s above the Roof of the mouth? The nose and airway! So as the tongue pushes on the roof of the mouth during breastfeeding, the airway is growing into a beautiful shape that will ensure nose breathing, the single most important habit of our life! This also grows the face more proportionately and beautifully, like Brad Pitt. A breastfeeding benefit is that your son will look like Brad Pitt and your daughter will look like Claudia Schiffer!

Bottle feeding and sippy cup sipping has the potential to separate the epiglottis and soft palate and drive the tongue back therefore altering its natural action. This significantly increases the risk of adults developing airway problems like sleep apnea.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you notice your baby has trouble latching during breastfeeding we can help by providing laser frenectomy. Please take advantage of the multitude of breastfeeding benefits. This is extremely important for proper nutrition and a lifetime of good health.
