Why is it so important to breathe through our nose? It seems obvious but I’ve been noticing more and more of my patients are mouth breathers due to airway problems. The role of the nose is to purify and humidify the air so that the lungs don’t get shocked. It also filters the air by drawing nitric oxide from the sinuses which disinfects it prior to it traveling to the lungs. Mouth breathing on the other hand takes 60-65% of the moisture from the mouth and delivers cold, dirty air to the tonsils and lungs. There is also 20% more oxygen in the air from the nose than the mouth. The nose is mother nature’s organ for breathing not the mouth. This develops the face more proportionally and allows the child to develop a mature swallow and nasal breathing. Bottle feeding has the potential to separate the epiglottis and soft palate and drive the tongue back therefore altering its natural action. 1 cup yogurt (such as almond, coconut, or plain)
1 ripe banana, peeled
1/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk (or soy, or cow’s)
1/3 cup peanut butter (or nut or seed butter of your choice)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
(Yields 4 servings)
Process the banana and yogurt in a blender until smooth. Add the milk, peanut butter, and cinnamon. Process until very smooth
Per Serving: 234 calories; 16g fat; 13g protein; 14g carbohydrates; 3g dietary fiber; 2mg cholesterol; 116mg sodium.
