Are you genetically prone to gum disease? Until recently, approaches in dentistry usually shared a “one-size-fits-all” philosophy. But recent advancements in genetic testing have brought the field of dentistry to the forefront of the personalized medicine revolution.

Here at Aurora Periodontal Care, our very own Dr. Sharona Dayan has been instrumental in elucidating the influence of The Interleukin-1 gene on periodontal disease expression. Dr. Dayan published her research on the biomarker Interleukin-1 as implicated in periodontal disease in the October 2004 edition of Journal of Dental Research, and this inflammatory biomarker is now the target of the PerioPredict test for determining which patients are genetically prone to severe periodontitis. This test uses a simple cheek swab to determine if they or their children are at risk for severe periodontitis.  The dentist can then deliver customized preventative care, including more frequent cleanings and laser periodontal therapy to prevent or mitigate the onset of periodontal disease. Left untreated, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss.
