When patients describe her, they often use words like “friendly,” “quietly competent” or simply “warm.” Founder and guiding light for Aurora Periodontal Care, Dr. Sharona Dayan brings an impressive resume and a truly luminous background.
At the age of nine, Dr. Sharona Dayan and her family were uprooted and forced to escape persecution in Iran. To help with family expenses, she volunteered as a math tutor after school and later worked as a literacy tutor for Project Literacy, experiencing first-hand the joys of helping others.
She grew into a formidable scholar with a gentle heart, attending UCLA for her undergraduate work, then moving on to multiple degrees at Harvard University in Periodontology and Oral Medicine. She was a fully funded NIH grant recipient where she completed her Doctoral research in the field of Oral Biology. During this time she became the first student to complete her specialities and Doctorate degree in a four year accelerated program.
“Dentistry has always been an important part of my life. Both my father and brother practice general dentistry in California. I graduated from UCLA Dental School, and then pursued specialty training in Periodontics and Oral Medicine at Harvard. There, I also became a Doctor of Medical Sciences in Oral Biology where I conducted NIH-funded research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the areas of oral cancer and periodontal disease.
I currently work as a periodontal surgeon and owner of my private practice. I treat oral infections with laser surgery, I diagnose and treat oral conditions related to general health, I perform soft tissue and bone regenerative treatments, I convert the anxious dental patient to a lifelong fan. My work is both technical and also focused on healing the patient as an integrated individual. I have dedicated my practice not only to the highest standards of dental care, but also to supporting social causes important to my community and myself. I feel that part of my work is public outreach. I teach as an accredited provider of dental continuing education and lecture to and organize dental professionals to integrate medical and dental knowledge for the good of our patients. My ongoing goal is to be a good doctor for my patients, an inspiration for my colleagues, and a committed American for my community.”
Dr. Sharona Dayan established and built a highly successful Periodontal practice in the greater Boston area, where she also founded the Boston Dental Alliance (a Seattle Study Club chapter). She is renowned for her skills in periodontal surgery, laser periodontal therapy, minimally invasive treatment for gum recession, implantology and lecturing.
During her time at Harvard Brigham and Women’s Hospital, she provided care for medically complex patients needing oral care in a hospital setting, such as individuals with cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Her expertise in the relationship between oral health and its impact on overall health gives her unique insight when treating patients with other medical conditions.
Dr. Dayan has received over five years of periodontal education beyond the general dentist degree. More recently, she obtained advanced training from prestigious institutes such as Dr. Pat Allen’s Center for Advanced Education, the Misch International Implant Institute, the Kois Center, the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry (IALD) as well and the Airway Mini Residency.
Dr. Sharona Dayan is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, a frequent speaker and lecturer, and a nationally recognized luminary on the latest breakthroughs in laser dentistry, tissue regeneration and innovative surgical techniques.
In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, yoga, herbal research, and volunteers as a docent at the Getty Villa in Malibu—maybe you’ll see her there!
