Rheumatoid arthritits is an autoimmune disease that causes painful and inflamed joints. Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, is said to have cured arthritis by extracting an infected tooth. Rheumatoid arthritis and periodontal disease are both pro-inflammatory conditions that may be interconnected. To make sure that your body is the healthiest it can be, have your gums checked by a periodontist at least once a year. Why risk getting a serious condition that could be prevented with a simple laser LANAP gum disinfection. Call us today to schedule your gum check up, (310) 205-0900.

How Often Should You See Your Dentist
How Often Should You See Your Dentist?
Over the years Dentists and Hygienists have recommended a professional cleaning every six months, but the times “they are a changing.”
More and more patients are being scheduled on a 3 or 4 month recall for hygiene maintenance. The changes that can occur in a patient’s mouth can start within 3 months of their last cleaning. Science has shown that oral bacteria colonize about every 3 months and more frequent cleanings break up these colonies and do not allow them to establish on the teeth and gums.
Patients who are older and have certain health conditions will also benefit from more frequent cleanings. Medications and dietary changes can cause dry mouth (lack of saliva) which can increase the risk of decay and bacterial growth. Younger patients who are in orthodontic treatment will benefit from more frequent cleanings, since the orthodontic bands and wires make cleaning at home very difficult. Patients who are pregnant or going through any hormonal changes are especially at risk for gingivitis (gum inflammation).
Cleanings scheduled every 3 or 4 months are advised for the optimal health of the body.
Some individuals, (about 10% if the population) who are resistant to bacteria, a 6 month cleaning schedule may be adequate. The more typical dental patient has medical considerations, physical limitations which can interfere with a daily routine and a more susceptible immune system.
When your Dentist or Hygienist recommend additional cleanings every year, they are taking a preventative approach to keeping your teeth and gums as healthy as possible and avoid tooth loss.
Why One-Visit Full-Mouth Gum Disinfection is Beneficial for Patients with Gum Disease
What is One-Visit-Full-Mouth Gum Disinfection?
For patients with bleeding gums and inflammation, our profession recommends a thorough cleaning under the gum line (also known as “deep cleaning”) in combination with antimicrobial irrigation. The One-Visit Full-Mouth gum disinfection therapy for treating Early-Onset Gum Disease involves scaling and root planing of all pockets within a single session.
In our office, we use laser assisted technology to help us get even better and faster results. Most patients see a benefit within one day of treatment, and tell us that their gums no longer bleed when they brush and floss. This is because our lasers are designed to specifically ablate periodontal bacteria: passing unabsorbed by healthy cells and instead targeting and annihilating pigmented pathogenic bacteria.
What are the benefits?
Strong evidence drawn from periodontal clinical research literature indicates that the One-Visit Full-Mouth gum disinfection method, when compared to a staged quadrant per quadrant therapy over multiple sessions, results in significant additional microbial improvements. These studies determined One-Visit-Full-Mouth Disinfection to be the definitively superior protocol for deep cleaning by way of the checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization technique, which permits scientists to evaluate a large number of pathogenic microbiota implicated in gum disease.
This means that if you are in need of deep cleaning for treatment of early-onset gum disease, opting for One-Visit Full-Mouth Gum Disinfection as opposed to the quadrant per quadrant therapy done in multiple sessions will provide markedly better results, even after 8 months. What’s more, we carry out the disinfection within a single session rather than multiple quadrant per quadrant sessions. If you are in need of thorough cleaning beyond the gum line for treatment of Early-Onset Gum Disease, Dr. Dayan strongly recommends One-Visit Full-Mouth Gum Disinfection because of our outstanding results and convenience for the patient.
